Samsung reveals new HDR sensor: Isocell GNK

Samsung’s latest reveal, the Isocell GNK smartphone camera sensor, brings forth a promise of vivid and dynamic image capabilities. With a focus on embracing high dynamic scenes, this sensor seems geared to transform smartphone photography.


The Isocell GNK boasts a 50-megapixel 1/1.3-inch sensor, sporting an effective resolution of 8,160 by 6,144 pixels and individual pixels sized at 1.2 μm. Samsung's integration of staggered HDR technology, coupled with three distinct ISO modes, enhances the sensor's HDR performance, expanding image dynamic range to a staggering 102 dB. The Smart-ISO Pro further refines this, minimizing motion artifacts and delivering images with impressive 14-bit color depth.

Video prowess is another highlight, with the Isocell GNK capable of recording 8K video at 30 frames per second while maintaining a broad field of view. Additionally, it supports 4K recording at 120 fps and full HD HDR video at frame rates reaching 240 fps. However, the electronic rolling shutter, a common trait among sensors, might introduce distortion in high-speed scenarios.

Samsung has emphasized ultra-fast autofocus with the Isocell GNK, utilizing Dual Pixel Pro (PDAF) autofocus technology. This enables rapid focusing on moving subjects across the frame, enhancing the overall video quality.

Low-light performance seems promising, with the sensor employing pixel merging in dim-lit scenarios to create larger 2.4 μm pixels, amplifying light sensitivity and reducing noise. Moreover, on-chip remosaic technology optimizes Tetrapixel benefits in bright conditions, delivering exceptional quality in 50 MP images.

While the Isocell GNK showcases impressive capabilities, its synergy with smartphone processing power will determine its true potential. Samsung's endeavor to integrate this sensor into upcoming smartphones remains an anticipation, with speculations hinting at its debut in the Google Pixel 8.
